Magenta Line

Magenta Line or Line 8 is built like an arc through the southern parts of Delhi and was the second corridor to be opened under Delhi Metro Phase III. It is the first, though, to have driverless trains running on communication-based train control (CBTC) technology.

Magenta Line Interesting Facts

  • The line got inaugurated in two stages where the first section from Botanical Garden to Kalkaji Mandir was opened for public by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 December 2017 and the second stage got inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on 28 May 2018.
  • All trains on the line comprise six coaches, and they have a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
  • Every station on the line has platform screen doors for enhanced safety.
  • It is the only line on the entire system to have civilian entry restricted at one of its stations — Shankar Vihar — which is located in the military area.
  • As with all the non-Phase I line, Line 8 uses standard gauge (1435 mm) tracks and 25 kV alternating current supplied from the overhead catenary. Magenta Line has 25 stations along a route length of 34.2 km.

Further Extension of Magenta Line

Under Delhi Metro Phase IV, Magenta Line is to be extended further by 28 kilometres and 24 stations. From Janakpuri West, the line will head northwards and take a U turn for the opposite direction before finally terminating at the Ramakrishna Ashram Marg station of Blue Line.
