A prominent stronghold of the Hoysala Empire from the 11th to 14th century, the small town of Belur fascinates tourists with its history and legends. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Chennakeshava Temple is the chief attraction here. Often compared to Khajuraho, the towering temple is intricately carved and a photographer’s delight. Inside it, the Narasimha Pillar, 30 feet tall, is especially eye-catching. Also known as Velapuri or Velur, Belur is home to Vishnu Samudra as well, which deserves a visit, especially if you are a nature lover.
